C4 photosynthesis is an extraordinary case of a complex trait that evolved independently in at least 61 plant lineages. Amaranthaceae (incl. Chenopodiaceae) shows an immense diversity of C4 syndromes, and therefore, represents a central component allowing the investigation of the evolution and regulation of C4 photosynthesis. My research interests focus on the evolution of C4 gene regulation in Saloleae (Amaranthaceae). To this end, we use multi-omics approaches involving comparative transcriptomics, metabolomics, proteomics, and genomics followed by single-cell gene expression and subcellular metabolite distribution.
